Description: I forgot this was in my collection!! Here is part 1 of 3 of the oldest "Tonight" Show with Johnny Carson in my collection - from Dec. 3, 1963! The show was quite low-key, considering that JFK had been assassinated only 2 weeks before! I'm sure this was a from a kinescope. I cut out most of the first two guests and left most of the big name, Henny Youngman. Notice the barbaric, plain set...and how often the overhead mic gets in the picture!! |

| generalbullmoose ::: Favorites I hardly recognized Ed's voice at first! Wow. And featuring a band member...I wish they had done that in later years. 07-09-02 18:54:39 _____________________________________________________ | |

| vigilance77 ::: Favorites It was a low key evening, for sure. Love seeing Skitch Henderson!! Thanks for posting this treasure! I was 11 years old at that time! 07-08-23 13:27:22 _____________________________________________________ | |
| wamy49 ::: Favorites Wow! Super! I was in ninth grade and we were all only one week beyond the assassination of JFK...needed some laughs. I lived in Blue Point (Long Island) and met Johnny twice --- he was incredibly nice to the starstruck teenager that I was. There will never be another Johnny Carson... 07-08-11 18:57:53 _____________________________________________________ | |
| prausch65 ::: Favorites Good point Mr. Gauthier, another example of your description of Kinnescope would be the so called "lost" episodes of "The Honeymooners". They appear to have a bubble type appearance. 07-08-07 18:48:04 _____________________________________________________ | |
| prausch65 ::: Favorites Indeed, its really ashame that a great show like this had no recorded material to view for future generations. Also the Steve Allen and Jack Paar versions also seem to be lost. 07-08-07 18:45:44 _____________________________________________________ | |
| noahf67 ::: Favorites Even in it's grainy b&w form, a historic artifact like this is one truly illustrative of it's time...Not so much in terms of the content, but in it's form and presentation. I cannot imagine that the Tonight show's target demo age would have been at that time chronologically any older than that of Leno's current day offering. But this specimen proves evidence of a public undeniably more mature, if not to some extent sociopolitically restrained, in pre-revolutionary early 60's NYC. Fascinating. 07-08-06 03:14:11 _____________________________________________________ | |
| noahf67 ::: Favorites If only the original color tape might someday surface...keep hope alive! 07-08-06 02:58:28 _____________________________________________________ | |
| darrengauthier ::: Favorites Kinescoping isn't simply shooting a tv screen with a film camera; it involves a modified CRT and a special lens in a large apparatus. The principle is the same, but the process is tweaked a bit. Other variables are at play - sources of the feed (live, tape or air)affect quality significantly, as does film stock, shutter speed, and even the qualifications of the kinescope operator. Some kinnies look better than others and this is why. 07-08-04 11:34:09 _____________________________________________________ | |
