What is this good for? This is especially good for web or graphic designers who are dealing with difficult clients that want the photos they take themselves to fit into an impossible position. I can totally understand where this tool might be abused by dishonest people but from a design perspective, this tool can certainly save a lot of time when it comes to clients who give you art work that doesn't match the parameters of your design... say a horizontal brochure with a vertical photo or art.

Now imagine that technology in an HDTV - taking 4:3 broadcast pictures and retargeting them dynamically to fit a 16:9 window. That is potentially far superior to the current (and rubbish IMHO) zoom and crop options.

Artists and photographers have been manipulating images since the first camera. This is just another tool in that toolbox.

That's brilliant, though a drawback to this technique would be that it would only work well for uncompressed, non-grainy imagery. The condensing algorhythm could be thrown off by an image's lossy pixel discoloration or compression artifacts (unless there was some kind of routine to counter those effects). This would be great for newspaper/magazine layout, where photos often need to be adjusted to fit into specific sizes and shapes before the deadline.

It's nice, but it seems that the Web sites that would benefit from this technology the most are news sites, which run into ethical problems when altering photos that accompany news stories.
