Hello! It's Friday May 11, 2007 and I'm Kristin Volk with a UPI Headline Update. The U.S. Senate may not take up an Iraq war-funding bill passed by the House yesterday. The bill ties $96 billion in funds to progress by the Iraqi government. Senate leaders from both parties are reportedly negotiating new legislation that would be accepted by the White House and Democrats that control Congress. President Bush has promised to veto the House-passed bill. Meanwhile, a slight majority of Iraqi lawmakers supports setting timetables for withdrawing U.S. troops from their country. But, Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki reportedly doesn't accept this proposal. A former speaker of the Parliament says that until Iraqi forces are capable of defending the country and bringing security, they're not ready for timetables. A parliamentary member allied with anti-American cleric Moqtada Sadr says they're not asking for an immediate withdrawal. Rather, he says a pullout would happen only when security forces are built up and qualified to take over. Pope Benedict the 16 is stirring an abortion debate. The Pope addressed thousands of young Catholics in Brazil yesterday, telling them to promote life from its beginning to natural end. Brazil, the world's largest Catholic country, is part of Benedict's tour during his first pilgrimage to Latin America. The Pope made no mention of Brazil's free distribution of condoms to combat AIDS, but he did call for responsible sex and fidelity between spouses. Firefighters are battling a wind-swept brushfire that's burned thousands of acres of Santa Catalina Island off the California coast. The blaze, which began yesterday, has forced tourists and residents to evacuate. Flames also threatened the city limits of Avalon where hundreds of people waited to board ferries back to the mainland. Only 2 inches of rain have fallen on Catalina since January. Thanks for watching today's new headline. Check out weekly wrap-up from the White House on upi.com. For all of us at UPI, have a nice weekend.
