Description:

The promotional movie (screener) presented by the Iranian delegation at the International Physics Olympiad 2006 closing ceremony in Singapore. It's an invitation movie to the 2007 Physics Olympiad to be hosted by the shiite entity in Isfahan, the city where Omar Khayyam has worked and lived. Is it the Busher reactor seen there? And - notice the nuclear explosion at the end of the stone throwing. In any case, chadors are required for all female participants of IPhO2007, as well as the leaders.

Amir, Many thanks for the info. I couldn't open the pic though, perhaps did bad job replacing characters, could you please paste it again? As a member of the committee - were you involved in preparing the questionnaire? (Or maybe you know those who did). If so, I'd like to use the opportunity to say that I liked it very much. I think it was very good academic level. Even more I was pleased to see a name of an Israeli professor from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in the questionnaire.

Regarding the fireworks - I was though hoping that you guys will be cool and put lotsa nuclear physics in Theory and Experiment :) I heard there was a real project to make a nuclear firework on the moon, somehow during the cold war.

Another thing. I couldn't quite understand why didn't the Iranians publish that video on their website or youtube or elsewhere. It's a great video, and all we have is my poor screener which I shot during the closing ceremony of IPhO2006 holding a small camera (my hand is locked 90º ever since :) If you could get them to do so, it would be nice.

I myself participate in IPhO2007 (as an academic committee member) and it was nothing like what you said. Nobody had chador. Except some non-Iranian muslim participant who were fully wrapped-up, the rest of the ladies wore loose scarf, regular pants and shirts (some of them with short-sleeves). BTW, since when firework is done with nuclear explosions? :)

Thanks for posting this video. Some comments about what you wrote in the introduction: 1- Omar Khayyam lived and worked in Neyshabur a northeastern city of Iran not in Isfahan which is almost in the center. 2-That is NOT a nuclear explosion at the end of the stone throwing. It is just a fire play.

Hi, many thanks for the info. Yes, of course it's a graphical boom effect but it's surely a hint :) The Bushehr reactor is also there, isn't it? I hope prof. Mohammad Seri Rad adds some nuclear physics to the IPhO2007 questionnaire - that would be cool :) It can be seen that Isfahan is beautiful. I wish I could visit Iran in general, and this event in particular, without getting lynched :)
