Make sure the tip isn't loose and that your joint or solder isn't too much for the iron you have to handle. The dark stuff is copper reacted with the air because it wasn't tinned properly. I'd chuck the tip in a drill, sand it until it's nice and shiny, then use some flux and re tin the tip so it doesn't oxidize. That will also help the thing conduct heat so you don't have to sit there for 5 min on a single joint.

Soldering will not work on aluminum. At least not using rosin core solder.

Should't you use fresh solder with flux when connecting the wire?

This was a bit more of a specialized demo for a friend who had to solder to a pad, and yes, a sponge can be used, u normally use a damp rag myself, it's off the shot. Holding clamps are nice, but they aren't a must, I've been soldering without them for some time now.
